Robin Minz made his MI debut. Ryan Rickelton — promoted to open — and Will Jacks set the tone immediately. 78 for no wicket in six overs. Rickelton 37, Jacks 38. A powerplay that should have set up 220+.

Jacks fell at 93 (caught off Praful Hinge), but Rickelton was unmoved. He reached his fifty in 28 balls, his century in 51, and finished unbeaten on 123 off 55 balls — his maiden IPL century on debut. Alongside Naman Dhir (27) and Hardik Pandya (35 off 20), MI built steadily — but the death bowling from SRH was exceptional. Cummins conceded just 6 in the 17th over. Malinga finished with 1/29 from his 4 overs — easily the most economical SRH bowler. MI scored only 41 runs in the final 4 overs, finishing on 243/5 — a good total, but not as commanding as the powerplay had promised.

🎯 Malinga & Cummins's Death-Over Discipline: The last 4 overs of MI's innings — by rights expected to produce 60–70 — yielded just 41 runs. Cummins's 17th over: 6 runs. Malinga's 1/29 economy is extraordinary for a match that produced 32 sixes. Their discipline at the death suppressed MI from what could have been 260+.

Chasing 244 at Wankhede — a target only ever chased once before in an IPL match at this venue, and that was 50 runs lower. The match equation was simple: if SRH's top order fires early, 244 is chaseable. If they lose wickets in the powerplay, the required rate becomes impossible. The first six overs: 86 for no wicket. The equation had been answered by over six.

Abhishek Sharma attacked Trent Boult from the second ball — slicing him through extra covers for a boundary. Travis Head smashed Boult for THREE sixes in the third over — 18 from one over. Abhishek hit Bumrah down the ground for a six. By the end of six overs, SRH were 86/0. The required rate had fallen from 12.25 to 10.39.

Then Ghazanfar's sensational double-wicket over. He had Abhishek miscue to backward point (caught). Next ball: Ishan Kishan — who had been promoted in the order — chopped the ball back onto his stumps. Two wickets, zero runs, one over. SRH: 153/4 with Hardik then removing Head. In two overs, MI had taken 3 wickets. Required rate: 15.62 off 54.

Then Heinrich Klaasen walked in. What happened next was one of the great death-over batting performances in IPL 2026. 65 off 22 balls. Strike rate: 295.45. 7 fours. 5 sixes. Full tosses were flicked over mid-wicket for six. Bumrah's back-of-a-length deliveries were cut behind point for four. Salil Arora at the other end hit 30 off 15 with two sixes. In 5.2 overs, Klaasen and Arora added 91 runs to win the match by 6 wickets with 4 balls to spare. Wankhede had never seen a chase like it.

💔 Bumrah's Difficult Night: Jasprit Bumrah went for 41 from 3 overs — economy 13.67. Klaasen attacked him ferociously in the death overs, including a full-toss banged over the bowler's head and a Salil Arora no-look shot off his final delivery that went for six over long-off. Ghazanfar (6.50 economy) was MI's only effective bowler — but even his brilliance couldn't arrest the Klaasen-Arora freight train. Trent Boult was the most expensive: 61 from 4 overs (15.25 economy), including the Head-hammering 3rd over.

06
Match Narrative

Toss & Setup: MI won the toss and elected to bat — a tactical choice driven by Rohit and de Kock's absences (injury). Rickelton opened with Will Jacks in what proved to be an inspired decision. SRH made one change: Harsh Dubey replaced Shivang Kumar.

Rickelton's Career-Defining Start: Will Jacks's 46 off 22 balls set the platform, but Rickelton was the constant. He hit Eshan Malinga for six over long-off in the first over. He swept Harsh Dubey for four. By the end of the powerplay: Jacks 38, Rickelton 37. An MI powerplay of 78/0 — extraordinary against SRH's attack. When Jacks fell, Rickelton accelerated. His 50 came off 28, his 100 off 51. Unbeaten at the end of 20 overs: 123 off 55. The highest score in a MI vs SRH match at Wankhede. On debut.

Ghazanfar's Game-Changing Over (9th of SRH Chase): SRH were cruising at 153/2 after 12 overs. The required rate had fallen to 10.33. Abhishek on 64, Head on 47. Then Ghazanfar — who had been the most economical MI bowler — produced a ball that induced a miscue from Abhishek to backward point. Ball three: Ishan Kishan, just arrived at the crease, chopped back on. Ball four: Hardik Pandya removed Head. Three wickets in two overs. Required rate: 15.62. MI were back.

Klaasen Ends It All: Klaasen's first ball faced was a length delivery outside off from Ashwani Kumar — flicked over square leg for six. His fifth ball: a Bumrah full toss that he banged flat over long-off. That was the moment the result became inevitable again. Salil Arora's finishing — particularly the no-look shot off Bumrah's final delivery to go over long-off — gave the win its perfect exclamation mark.

🔑 Turning Point — But Which One?

There were two. The first: Ghazanfar's double-wicket over at 153/2 — two balls that swung the match to MI. The second: Klaasen's first ball — a six off Ashwani Kumar that signalled all of MI's hope was about to be extinguished. The match lasted two overs as a contest from MI's perspective. Everything before and after was SRH's.

📊 Impact: SRH jump to joint-2nd with RCB and RR (all on 12 points) — three teams separated by NRR for the coveted top-2 spots. MI crash to joint-8th with LSG on 4 points — their playoff probability is now under 2%.
